Get Inspired: The Sourtoe Cocktail
It's impossible to live in northern Canada and not hear whisper of the Sourtoe Cocktail out of Dawson City, Yukon Territory.
This is one drink that's even odder than it sounds, and you can head down to Dawson City's Downtown Hotel if you want to grab one for yourself.
The premise? Pick a drink (traditionalists go for whiskey), add a human toe (yes, a real dried human toe), let that toe touch your lips when you take a swig, and walk away with a certificate declaring your feat.
Captiain Dick Stevenson, inventor of the Sourtoe Cocktail, recently passed away. You can read more about him and his culture-defining cocktail here.
And while you're in the area, you may want to read about a man who lost his toes due to frostbite during a race in the Yukon and ended up donating them to the bar...only to be reunited later when he stopped by for a drink.
You can also follow Sourtoe Cocktail on Twitter.
While there are an innumerable number of oddball rituals specific to the north (many of which involve alcohol in varying quantities), the Sourtoe Cocktail remains one of my all-time favs.
Do recommend.
