My Favourite Anti-Racism Reads
Here are my favourite non-fiction anti-racism books. If you're looking to build an anti-racist understanding through reading, I highly recommend checking these out. Each book is linked to Chicago's only black woman-owned bookstore Semicolon Bookstore.
I've read and recommend each one of these, and if you're looking for a reading buddy to discuss these, I'll be your buddy:
How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi
Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America by Ibram X. Kendi
The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander
Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge
The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin
Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad (don't just read this one -- you have to do the workbook, even if you listen to the audio)
White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk about Racism by Robin DiAngelo
Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson
So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein
An Indigenous People's History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz
You'll notice a lot of these books are sold out at the moment. Consider listening to them on audiobook instead via Libro.fm (they support independent bookstores). Libro.fm recently made an Anti-Racism Reading List for easy browsing.
